About the Art

Life is a distracting place.

The ever-expanding sphere of Things That Demand Focus feels like an emergency life raft that someone activated in a too-small shared space. It’s hissing as it grows, pressing everyone up against the glass walls until our selves are rendered immobile by an unbroken drone of ringing alerts.

Writing pops the raft and allows silence to fill my glass room.

First, I focus on the physical writing; every word has to be spelled correctly and written in the appropriate size, in order, exactly as spoken. Every piece of Detention Art demands to be readable from start to finish.

After a certain number of hours, I begin to smell the fresh cut grass and stale beer of a Super Bowl stadium. The burnt rubber glaze of a Formula One track permeates my consciousness. The walls of the glass room have fallen away completely.

I hope my work brings you a fraction of the escape it has brought me. Thank you for stopping by.
